I just entered the second dungeon and the first group of enemies were surprisingly tough. I guess I'll have to grind at the entrance and warp back to town to heal.

I've run into an interesting encounter. There's an enemy called Fool in the third dungeon that is utterly immune to physical attacks, so the only way to kill one of them is by burning off a ridiculous amount of MP, which is not good for dungeon-crawling in the long term. As a way of being merciful, they only hit for about 5 HP and usually try to run away in a couple turns anyway if you're not interested in killing them. To speed up the process I usually also try to run from the battle... except the Fool prevents my escape. Then it tries to run. And my party prevents its escape. Repeat. Over and over. For like eight turns.

It's like those stupid, awkward situations where you try to walk past someone in a narrow area and the two of you both move in the same direction to get out of each others' way. And then you chuckle nervously at each other and try again, both moving simultaneously into a position that's no better than before, and then you both have the idea to just stop and let the other person through, but nobody moves, and you both figure "all right well then I'll just go" at the same time and you're right back at the start, and your ears are starting to burn because this is getting fucking embarrassing and you're not even making eye contact anymore, and oh god

but if you do kill the Fool, you get a pretty significant chunk of XP!

it's one of those RPG enemies.

Another annoying thing, enemies that put you to sleep but can't hit hard enough to kill you, so you just get in this endless loop while they chip away at your HP. Dragon Quest has some annoying battles like that!

Okay, on the last challenge :(

I laughed way more than I should have when I saw "Burrito" as an item.

These maps should get everyone through the GQ challenges. Everything's labeled, except for the stuff that isn't. I didn't start this project until after I'd already looted a few chests, but there you go.

1F | 2F | 3F | 4F

Have fun!

Just beat Guadia Quest! For a 1987 RPG, the plot is pretty epic, and certainly more coherent than Final Fantasy's poorly-explained time loop mess. It also sets things up nicely for the sequel...

Now, onto Haggle Man 3! The end is in sight!

Is the stuff about dropping your weapons east of Timbuktu for stronger ones true? If so, how the heck would it work? I only have one set of weapons and sold my old ones, and I can't drop equipped ones?

Is the rumor BS?

I'm guessing yes. I probably wouldn't listen to rumors unless it appears as an official cheat in a magazine.

I dropped one of the starting weapons on the closest swamp tile and nothing happened, for what it's worth.

How many GameGuadia are there total?

I found 6 in the following locations (I think I remember grabbing these):
The swamp (hinted by the girl in Timbuktoo)
The masoleum (also hinted by the girl)
The one in the Labyrinth Mountains (the lone tree)
The one north and then east of that one (girl's hint)
The one southwest of the tower (the lone tree)
One near the previous one (girl's hint)

Is that all of them and are those all right or did my memory fail me?

Heh, I found one of 'em and it killed me dead. Not looking at your spoilers since I'm obviously way to early in the game to be hunting 'em. (Still working on the first dungeon.)

That said, I do have a different Guadia question: I made a little side trip and stumbled across the Mausoleum. At this point, the only thing I could find there was a White Orb. The manual something about "helps in Guadia battles". Anyone know what that means?

Oh, and a random conclusion I came to: the free restore point in the dungeon is theoretically nice, but practically useless. Since it's not "on the way" to anything, if you need a restore after a treasure run it's always faster to warp straight to town, rest there (for a wopping 5G), then warp back to the dungeon entrance.

If you use it as an item in a battle, it imposes a pretty significant stat debuff on a Guadia.

What about the Black Orb? I found one in TheDungeon and figured it had a similar effect, but haven't used it yet.

I don't know; I'm going to try it over lunch today. I would really like to snag a GameGuadia.

There are four items that have the stat-lowering effect on Guadia. In increasing order of power: White Orb, Black Orb, Gold Orb, Guadianip. The first three can be purchased from the item shop in Centraan; the last is only found in dungeons and in very limited supply.

Keep in mind that you must use the Pact command to indicate that you're intending to capture the Guadia before using any of these items, or they'll have no effect and will be wasted.

I cleared Guadia Quest simply by getting the credits. This is so I can Free Play it without any stupid yawns and commentary.

I just *narrowly* beat dungeon 1-4th floor boss at level 16, though, when I did it for the challenge.

Does anyone know what the hell "Tace" is supposed to be short for? It's a suffix on some armor items (IronTace, frex).

I was curious about the same thing. Apparently it just means armor. I wish dictionary.com had more information on its origins, but I'm guessing it's just an old-world/archaic term for armor.

Try searching Google Books for an old specialist dictionary. I believe that taces are a type of armored legging or greaves.

Hello, here's one:

Well, GQ gets points for teaching me a new armor word, and I'd thought I knew most of 'em already.

Hero names for my freeplay: Hopp, Cabe, and Zinn.

I got a GameGuadia!

Specifically, the one in the swamp. I used a black orb on them, then lit into him with everything I had until he went down. My Guadia at the time was an AgedGuadia. It drops a sombrero, which is a pretty nice piece of armor that's equippable by all three characters, when you beat it.

What level were your peeps?

'Cause when I found the GameGuadia, I fucking lol'd, and even though I don't plan on playing much more GQ, I'd like to snatch up a GameGuadia.

Man, stupid group of blue Will-o-Wisps almost killed me right on the doorstep of the first dungeon boss after they put everybody to sleep! Good thing I had a Naga Wing.

Oh well, I guess I'll level up a bit more and make sure I whomp that boss good.

Can you fight the GameGuadia repeatedly? Or is each a one-time fight?
