Default FC 45: Retro Game Challenge

Commence the hype a day early. The first big new release of this board is about to be here. And hey, it's already out in Japan, so there's that.

Retro Game Challenge
Namco Bandai | DS | Awesome Fake Retro Collection | 2009

Long live retro.

I wish Haggle Man 3 had twice as many levels. I would pay full price for it as a stand-alone game. Ah, if only.

Been watching the paltry number of fansubbed episodes.

Need this game so bad.

Sequel better not take a year to localise*. =(

* of course it WILL, because no one is going to buy the original when the sequel is on the shelf, so they'll milk it for a year and see what happens. le sigh.

so if you suck at old school NES games, or your reflexes aren't what they used to be fifteen years ago, is there still hope with this game?

Arooo! I hated that game! It reminds me too much of what Tecmo did with Ninja Gaiden, or what Capcom did to practically all the NES ports of their arcade games. Then again, I suppose that was the point. They wanted to recreate video game history, and boy did they ever do it.

Shivam: It depends on the game. Cosmic Gate and Star Prince aren't too demanding, but you'll pull most of your hair out trying to finish Rally King and its re-release. Haggle Man 3 is a real pain in the ass too, as I alluded to earlier. It was hard to make progress in Guardia Quest in the original Japanese release, but it probably isn't going to be too difficult in English.

I generally don't buy games out of love and support these days (can't afford it), but I may have to make an exception here. I haven't been following any of the coverage on it, but it all sounds pretty sweet.

I'm buying this on Friday or whenever I finish Ecclesia, whichever comes first.

I've been so stoked about this game since Parish & Co. first discussed it on Retronauts before the Japanese release. And now it's almost here. My excitement is at a crazy level right now.

I already have it paid for, so now I must simply wait the small, 3-day-long eternity for it to show up in stores.

I am excited as all get out for this. Enough so that I didn't do my standard order from amazon and get it a week after the fact thing. And besides, I have a giftcard from Gamestop, so thats where I'm going. I really hope my store gets a copy in tomorrow, as I'm booked solid for the rest of the week, and I want to play!

I've been liking what I hear of the game from the Retronauts blog. I'm very interested in the in game magazines and such. And it's going to sound silly, but I'm pretty happy that I can play as a girl character.

Don't sigh me, mister! I said that I realized WHY the designers did this, but it doesn't make the game any more fun to play. It's got the lengthy, Gordian knot levels of Goonies II coupled with the unbounding frustration of Ninja Gaiden... not a good combination as far as I'm concerned.

Improved them?

Well, maybe except for Strider.

Sometimes you get Bionic Commando, and sometimes you get Strider. Whatever may be the case, it's rare to get the arcade game that you actually wanted. I grew to resent the Nintendofication of popular arcade games... even with the better redesigns like Gyruss, I couldn't help but feel that I was the victim of false advertising.

It's great how you hold a grudge over developers working around hardware limitations for two decades.

Anyway, can we get back to talking about Retro Game Challenge? I hear it's pretty sweet!

Tom is not wrong.

Dang, this is the wrong time for me to become interested in a game. What are the chances that there'll still be copies of this on shelves ina few months.

Yeah, I'm debating whether or not to purchase it as soon as it comes out, or as late as it stays on store shelves, if I can guess how long that might be.

Although I do have to say, I'm rather interested in how they composed the music. I mean, is the selection in Retro Game Challenge supposed to be more reminiscent earlier Famicom titles, not the later ones?

In this game's case, that's a risk I'm just not willing to take.*

Still, wouldn't it be crazy if this game got super-popular for some reason and they had to issue several reprints, like the first Ace Attorney? That would defy my expectations in the best possible way.

*and by that I mean I've preordered

I will be angry at everyone who does not buy this game. Seriously, it's so good. And I want the sequel to come to the U.S.

I want this game, bad.

I want Street Fighter IV badder, and I'm poor. I'm sure someday you'll come to forgive me.

Edit: The only problem is, does this look like one of those games that's going to become really hard to find later on, like The Red Star (which I was lucky enough to just happen upon a copy)?

Street Fighter IV will do fine without your help. You are no longer my son. To the salt mines with you!

I'm curious to hear what cheat codes you guys use. I confess I got sick of the last Rally King SP challenge and used invincibility.

(Also, sorry if my comments above seemed harsh. I feared a thread derail.)

Relevant on-topic question!

How do these cheat codes work? I haven't heard much about them and am intrigued.

That's hard to find? There's still copies on the shelves of the local GameStop last time I checked.

I plan on getting this sometime within the month, but I'm probably going to miss release day thanks to needing to get my taxes done.

They're dispensed through the in-game magazines (usually once you make some progress in a given title) and are usually just button combos to enter at a game's title screen or in the course of play. They include 99 lives, invincibility, warps, that sort of thing. They're handy when you get stuck on a given challenge or find one particular game isn't much to your liking and want to jump past it quickly.

The only way this game could get better is if it serves as a precursor to an English version of the GCCX television show.

Sadly, the only network I could see picking it up would be G4. Yecch.
